Take This Cup The Jerusalem Chronicles Bodie and Brock Thoene 9780310335986 Books

Before I started reading Bodie and Brock Thoene's newest historical fiction novel, Take This Cup, I counted this to be the 39th book I've read by the Thoene's I have been enjoying their books for nearly 10 years now, and could not wait to delve into Take This Cup.

Having read the Thoene's for so long, I know that their books are often slow-paced and full of lots of information and historical facts, in addition to plenty of action and drama. This style could be a deterrent to some readers, but I see all the information and taking the time to really get to know the characters as a strength. Take This Cup was no exception.

In the novel, set around 30 AD, we meet 8 year Nehemiah, or "Nehi", as he's known. The book is written from his perspective, although we are led to believe he is writing it later on as a memoir, not necessarily as the events are happening. From his birth, his parents believe that God has a special purpose for him, and name him after the Old Testament Nehemiah, cupbearer to the king. Nehi and his family are shepherds in the land of Eden, and Nehi spends many hours learning about God from family friend, Rabbi Kagba, who was one of the magi who visited the infant Jesus from the East, and believes Him to be the Messiah. Nehemiah also begins to have dreams where he is visited by Joseph of the Old Testament, who gives him insight and wisdom about events to come. When bandits attack the family camp, Nehi must travel to Jerusalem with the Cup of Joseph, or Holy Grail, as he prepares to meet the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth. The novel chronicles his travels to Jerusalem, the time he spends with Jesus, and his own journey to understanding how great a sacrifice the Messiah is about to make for His people.

I really enjoyed this book, but it's not a quick read. There is so much information and historical background, that you can't skim the book and still get a good grasp of the depth of the story. I love how the Thoene's describe and develop their characters. They are very intentional, and you truly feel a connection to the characters through their personalities. I really felt as though I could picture exactly what it would have been like to sit next to Jesus as He taught. I could probably predict how Nehi would react to a situation, even though he's a fictional character. The book reminded me about the sacrifice that Jesus made for us, and I look forward to the next Thoene novel.

Take This Cup The Jerusalem Chronicles Bodie and Brock Thoene 9780310335986 Books Reviews

Good read. It showed the very personal nature of Christ. I love the way the authors can bring the characters alive yet incorporate Bible history and scripture. I've get to read one of their books that I didn't like.
Extraordinary writing! Made me feel I was Nehemiah! I experienced all that took place . I rejoiced., sobbed., smiled, was tired, cold, hungry. I felt every emotion of all the characters. I was left with such great love for our Savior Jesus Christ. Thank you Bodie Thone for this writing.
This story follows Nehemiah, the boy named after the Old Testament prophet, as he grows spiritually and physically when he becomes custodian of the cup that Jesus Christ would use at the Last Supper. If you know and love the Biblical account of the life of Christ, you'll relish this book. It's so very well written and told. Five stars for sure.
I admit when I started reading this book I was not impressed with the fictional characters as I enjoyed reading the books more closely based on Biblical texts. But the more I read, the more I enjoyed it and the weaving of Biblical facts with the fictional characters made an excellent story that touched my heart in many ways. Can’t wait to read the next book!!
Interesting blending of scripture and the imaginative story of Joseph's cup. Without a thorough knowledge of scripture however, one might not be able to differentiate between the two. The story is engaging and pulls you along and through it like a good story should.
The book held my interest enough to read it to the end, but I did find it a slow. I enjoy fantasy books, historical fiction, and I really enjoy reading books that are about the time of Christ and the early church. The problem I have with this book is that it seems to combine fantasy with historical fiction, which makes the story of the time of Christ seem less real rather then more real. I gave this book 3 stars because it was ok, but I wish it was better. For books in this time period I recommend the Acts of Faith series by Janette Oke or The Kingdom and the Crown series by Gerald Lund.
While the authors take liberty with the fictional portions of the book, they do an excellent job of weaving a fine story. I like the way they developed the characters and how they show their jobs were part of their destiny. Also it introduces the Jewish feasts, use of prayer shaws, and descriptions of constellations. I enjoy a good book where I learn things I don't know. The authors also do a great job of showing just how Christ"s followers just couldn't conceive that his kingdom was not an earthly one.
What a wonderful book! You follow the lives of Sarah the crippled weaver and her family as their lives bring them back together again to meet Jesus and host the last supper. You feel as if you are right there with them in Jerusalem, with all its sounds and smells, the glory of the temple. With the Sparrows as they struggle to live. I enjoyed this book very much. You could feel the confusion of the disciples as they tod to understand what Jesus said was telling them about his heavenly Kingdom versus their expectations of an earthly kingdom.
